3 Things I Wish I Knew as a Teen About Periods
-A letter from 40- year-old me to teenage me
Hi. I’m Margie.
I’m 40 years old, a mom, a mentor to a few amazing young women, and someone who still remembers vividly what it was like getting my period for the first time. I was 13, wearing white shorts (yep), and had zero clue what was happening.
There are a lot of things I’ve learned since then- about my body, about womanhood, about shame and strength. Sooo this blog post is for you if you’re a teen navigating your cycle, or even if you’re grown like mean and still unpacking the years of weird silence around it.
Here are the three things I really wish someone had told me back then:

1.You’re Not Broken If It’s Not “Like the Movies”
I expected my period to be like a gentle whisper, something I’d discreetly excuse myself for and be done within a few days. In reality? It was like a marching band with cymbals crashing through my uterus. I bled heavily, had cramps that knocked me out of school, and once I cried because I bled through my jeans during gym class.
I wish someone told me: EVERY period looks different.
There’s no ‘normal’ when it comes to flow, pain, or mood. I thought I was the only one who felt like a wreck every month. If I had known that some girls get cramps so badly that they puke, or that missing school because of your period isn’t weakness- it’s reality- I would’ve asked for help a lot sooner.
Now I talk to my daughter about all of it. The mess, the bloating, the “crying over a car commercial” phase. It’s all part of the package- and it’s okay.
2. Tracking Isn’t Just for Type-A Girls.
I used to rely on random guesswork, a vague sense of “I think it’s coming soon”, or, worst of all, the fear I’d start during gym class. I treated my cycle like a surprise party I never wanted.
But what I didn’t know back then is that tracking my period gives power. Not control (because, let’s be honest, periods are wild sometimes), but predictable.
Today, I continue using a period tracker app. I log how I am feeling- cramps, mood swings, weight, cravings, fatigue. It helps me understand my body like a map instead of a mystery.
And the truth? I wish 15-year-old me knew that her mood wasn’t just her being “overdramatic”- it was hormonal shifts, completely normal, and nothing to feel ashamed about. If I had started tracking then, I might’ve felt a little less confused and a lot less lonely.

3. You Are Not Dirty, Shameful, or a Burden
I want to scream this from the rooftops.
Periods aren’t gross. YOU are NOT gross.
I spent way too much of my youth hiding tampons and pads like they were contraband, panicking if I accidentally dropped one from my purse in class. Once, in 8th grade, a boy saw a pad in my pocket and made a joke, and I wished the earth would swallow me whole.
Looking back, I just want to hug that girl.
Menstruation isn’t shameful- it’s biological, beautiful, and brave. It’s your body doing what it was designed to do by God (Book of Gensis). No one jokes about nosebleeds or Band-Aids, yet we treat period products like they’re nuclear waste. -but WHY?
If I could go back, I’d say: “Stand tall. Carry that pad like it’s a trophy. You’re in the club now, sweetheart”.

Final Thoughts from Me- Now, at 40+
If you’re a teen reading this, I see you. It’s okay if your period makes you feel like your body’s betraying you some days. But one day, you’ll be grateful for its wisdom, its rhythm, it’s signals.
And if you’re a grown woman like me, and you’re still learning to unlearn the silence around periods- there’s still time.
Let’s raise girls who don’t whisper the word “tampon” or “pads” like it’s a secret. Let’s raise ourselves, too.
With honesty, warmth, and the occasional heating pad,
-Margie
